Artist Statement:
My current work consists of paintings and drawings on paper based on European and American fabric patterns for clothing and home decor. I'm interested what I like to call ‘chemical aesthetics’—the painterly process of reducing a thing (in this case a pattern) into perpetually self-sufficient elements and then piecing them back together. My work couples the visual vocabulary of instructional diagrams with the digitization of 80s era 8-bit schemata.
Biography:
Robert Otto Epstein was born in Pittsubugh, PA. He studied philosophy and political science at the University of Pittsburgh and is self-taught as an artist. Epstein has an affinity for the unselfconscious and untrained work of 'outsider' artists such as Martin Ramirez and Henry Darger. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally in New York City, Boston, Berlin, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City, Saugerties and Larchmont, NY. Recent exhibitions include group shows at Jack Hanley Gallery, Pierogi Gallery, Kenise Barnes Fine Art, Schema Projects, Mulherin + Pollard, Parallel Art Space, Airplane Gallery, Fountain Art Fair, Imogen Holloway and BK Projects. Epstein currently lives and works in Maplewood, NJ.
