Artist Statement:
I participate in the expansion of painting’s boundaries via a hybrid-practice of painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, & digital imaging with particular reference to color, light & space. For the last decade I manipulated everyday materials & ephemera of foreign cultures while living in those cultures—the contextual manipulations made multiple iconographic references. In the part-digital paintings, files are manipulated then printed to canvas where hand painting confounds the digital surface.
Biography:
"Ephemera & Culture: Italy, Turkey, & Japan" is a recently completed 10-year project where Wester lived & worked in 3 symmetrical cultures. Exhibitions in the U.S. & Europe include Antwerp, Berlin, Chicago, New York. Awards include AIR-Antwerpen Fellowship, Specialist Fulbright-Kyoto, The Hermitage & MacDowell Fellowships, Pollock-Krasner. Visiting Artist credits: CalArts-LA, SVA-NY, Sint Lucas Antwerp, Kyoto University of Art & Design, American Academy in Rome, Critic-Dept. Of Painting-RISD, 3-year Visiting Artist/faculty-Ringling College of Art & Design-Sarasota. Wester designed theatre Off-Broadway & in LA for writer/director Eve Ensler, producers Mike Nichols; Fox Television, The Court Theatre-LA; The Promenade Theatre, LaMama.
